Woody Guthrie
As a child, Woody heard his parents sing hymns and spirituals in his Oklahoma home. He lived in Texas for a while, but there wasn’t enough rain and people couldn’t grow crops to feed their families. The wind blew away all the good dirt, so people had to go west to find work. Woody also traveled around looking for work.
Woody started writing songs about everyday people and the troubles they had. He traveled around a lot and met a lot of people. Woody joined some other folk singers in New York and they wrote a lot of music about things that happened in the world. “This Land is Your Land” is one of America’s best-known folk songs. People from other countries have written words that match where they live. |
